Children’s needs in a communicative classroom

A communicative approach should be focused on learners. Children needs should be taken in cosideraton and should be of high importance. How a communicative classroom caters for these?

  • Children need to feel comfortable and safe in their learning environment. Listen to their contributions and encourage participation;
  • Learning needs to be fun, memorable and interesting, with activities like games or puzzles that children enjoy doing in their own language;
  • Give children a sense of achievement by using activities they can do well;
  • When you teach something new, it’s important to use a context that's familiar to your children;
  • Children also need clear, step-by-step guidance from you;
  • Provide opportunities for children to say what they want to. A communicative focus encourages real talk in the classroom;

So, this boils down to the following statements:

  • Teachers should listen to learners when they participate and motivate them to say more;
  • We should combine new grammar with vocabulary they already know;
  • Dividing up an activity into separate parts helps learners to do it better;
  • Children need opportunities to express their views;
